"Celebrating 25 Years"

The NC State Guardian ad Litem Program celebrated in May, 2009, with the "Making Children Our Priority for 25 Years" training conference in Durham, NC. Thousands of GAL volunteers, staff and attorney advocates were in attendance. The conference served as both celebration and training with many informative workshops. Special guest, NC Supreme Court Chief Justice, Sarah Parker, addressed the group and was photographed with GAL volunteers who had served the program 10 years or more. The conference was concluded with a cake cutting ceremony and a special video program honoring a selected volunteer from each judicial district.

Local Buncombe County GAL Ellen F. was selected by our staff to be honored at the conference.
Ellen, pictured here with her husband and grandson, has been a GAL for 10 years. She draws from her years of experience in the mission field, utilizing her bilingual skills in working with her child clients and their families.

Asheville Area Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Association (AAVGALA)

Mission Statement:
The "AAVGALA" is a 501 C-3 designated non-profit Corporation, founded in 1990. Its purpose is to provide continuing education and support to volunteer Guardians ad Litem. To provide services and special needs for children we serve, and to raise funds to assist the association in its endeavors.

In addition to providing many interesting educational programs, speakers and opportunities for the GAL's to interact, the AAVGALA raises money from the sale of our license plate covers and donations. We administer the "Children's Assistance Fund" (formerly known as the scholarship program). In the past year, many of our child clients have benefited from this fund. We have provided money for special tutoring, eyeglasses, summer sports and music camps, to name a few. Any GAL may request assistance for their child client from the fund by submitting the application provided in your newsletter.

If you are interested in speaking for the most vulnerable children in Buncombe County, please contact the GAL office at (828) 251-6130 or e-mail us at info@galbuncombe.org.
