GAL Training Program Information
Residents of Buncombe County who wish to become volunteers with the Guardian ad Litem program must complete 30 hours of training conducted by the staff of the Guardian ad Litem program. The training is learner-centered, interactive, and hands-on. It is designed to provide the volunteer with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be a GAL volunteer, an advocate for children involved in the court system through no fault of their own. The North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Training Curriculum is used. The training curriculum includes:Learning the role of a volunteer Guardian ad Litem. An introduction to the laws, the child protection system, and the courts. Exploring cultural awareness. Understanding families and children. Communicating as a GAL. Practicing the Guardian ad Litem role: Reporting and Monitoring. As of June 30 2009, we have 161 Guardian ad Litem volunteers - but we need your help. If you are interested in speaking for the most vulnerable children in Buncombe County, please contact the GAL office at (828) 251-6130 or e-mail us at info@galbuncombe.org. |
