Volunteer

People often ask "why" GAL's do the work they do? Meet two of our own GAL volunteers who have been serving the children of Buncombe County, NC (Judicial District 28) for over 20 years!

Many thanks to Betsy and Jan for their dedicated years of service.

Betsy Bolton

Betsy began as a GAL volunteer 20 years ago. She was also a staff supervisor for many years. Following her retirement, she again began serving as a volunteer. She was asked to share with you why she continues. In her words...

"The independence of this work, the broad reaching authority given the GAL by the court to search for and access relevant information about the child, the opportunity to advocate for the child in multiple forums where the GAL's opinion carries weight and, if well documented, can bring important life altering changes in a child's life. These are some of the reasons I am a GAL. The GAL is often the only consistent professional involved with a child and thus will have a unique perspective which can be vital to a child's well-being."

Jan

Jan became a GAL, in March, 1988, 21 years ago. Jan shared, she has worked with about 75 children along the way and still stays in touch with a few after all these years. Why? According to Jan...

"I find that GAL work is the most challenging volunteer work I have done. The court system was something I had no previous involvement with. Just learning the language has been an interesting challenge. The families we work with are all so different and yet in many ways all-the-same. I learn from each one. The children I have worked with teach me so many things about myself. Some of these lessons have been a joy. Some perhaps not as joyful, but still lessons learned. I feel the GAL program is a blessing to our children and their families."
